Laney and her friends have survived 6 days into the apocalypse and have made it back to their Arizona hometown—but now ferocious dust storms are threatening their lives. Without a working vehicle, Laney must think of a way to help their group of nine escape to the eastern side of the country, to where her father might still be alive. Even though she's promised to stick with her friends and not give up hope, Laney knows better - not all of them are likely to survive the journey and she may once again have to face the loss of someone she cares about. And worst of all, as the new leader of her group, another loss will be her fault, her worst nightmare.
But as Laney leads her friends from Colton and out into the new world, she finds out the storms are not her only enemy. Other survivors are, too, and kindness no longer exists. Worst of all, an old enemy might have survived a bit longer than she hoped...

This is the second book in this series and the first thing i will say to potential readers is that you really need to read the first book in this series as it will make this book make a lot more sense. You will be able to see the journey from the beginning and you will understand it more.I loved reading this book just as much as i loved reading the first book, I really enjoyed that this book started where the first book ended, it made it flow really well. You begin to see the characters in more details, you see into them, who they are and the motivations that move them. This story is filled with many emotions such as fear and emotional pain but there is also a vein running through it of hope and what could be. There is an element to it of fighting for what you want to make your life better and i loved that about this. This story is definitely filled with a lot of action from word go, right through to the end of the book, keeping you on your toes the whole time as there is no way to predict what is going to happen next. The way the author has written this is so very vivid in it's detail and you can imagine what happens in the book happening in real life!
The more i read about Jerome the more i love his character and i can't wait to find out more about him, who he is and what has made him the sort of person that he is, we have seen a small insight into his past and i think the things he has been through has made him the protective, caring and genuine person that he is. I am definitely rooting for him as far as romance goes. My heart goes out to Laney throughout this book...She has so much to give she could only open her big heart to others but every time she starts to she shuts down again and this is from fear alone, fear of losing others. Although she is young and the adults can only see them as children she makes a brilliant leader even though she takes on too much herself.
This really is a brilliant book and i can't wait for the third book in this series to see what happens next and see if they find a safe place. I can't recommend this book highly enough, it is a definite must read page turner of a book!!!

The Storm The Barren Trilogy Book #2 eBook Holly Hook Reviews
This was a very disturbing and upsetting novel. The world is a post-apocalyptic wasteland, where the sun's radiation will kill you if you're outside during the day. In book 1, we met a band of teenagers who managed to survive the blast but then had to fight each other. Now, in book 2, they've learned to work together, but the rules suddenly change when deadly windstorms begin to ravage the town. Forced to run for cover, they realize they can no longer stay put, and must journey across the country in search of other survivors. The real trouble begins when then find them - violent looters, an old nemesis, and a conspiring government that stockpiles supplies in order to protect the elite few (which, of course, doesn't include our heroes.) Just when it seems our heroes have finally found safety, they find themselves in the greatest danger of all.
This is a frighteningly believable look into the selfishness of humanity, and how awful we treat each other when we justify our actions as self-preservation. It is told from a first person perspective, of a teenage girl who is reluctant to form emotional bonds with others when she knows there's a good chance they won't all survive. The pace is steady, but the tension is constantly high which gives events a sense of urgency.
I volunteered to review an ARC of this novel.
The Storm is the second book by Holly Hook in the a barren Trilogy following The Pulse and it was outstanding. The story picks up following a small group of high school kids who were caught in a Pulse caused by an exploding star. This apocalyptic event wipes out most of the world with radiation killing almost all living things in its path. Those living things not affected during the main pulse are still at danger during the day due to the high levels of radiation from sun exposure and ozone damage. Laney the leader of the group after dealing with the power hungry, murderous, young man David, helps the remaining members of the group bury their families and coping as best as possible until a huge violent dust storm forces them to take shelter then action to survive. After several days the storm dies down a little and while accessing the damage Laney learns supplies are low, someone is dead and some are injured, forcing her to the realization they must push East to where there are more survivors and possibly help. Along the way they run into David who is still bent on harm, the shady scientist they thought had died, some killer looters, and the government. Not trusting anyone they learn that the government was aware of the danger and has a secret and deadly agenda. They also find out David is the Generals son and the scientist is working for the government. Now they not only have to have to escape the pulse and storm but David, the dangers of people and the government. With a little help and a stolen food truck and only armed with the knowledge they have gained they barely escape again but with little hope and no real plan.
I enjoyed this book as it developed the character, showing them grow and giving further insight to who they are and who they are becoming. Their growth helps strengthen and develop the plot line. The Storm was a fast paced read much like the Pulse, with many new twist in this dark survival story. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes post apocalyptic stories and I am looking forward to the third book.
